The Friday Round Up

August 28th, 2009 No comments

I do a lot more blog reading that blog writing these days. There is an amazing wealth of information, and powerful posts out there that are well worth sharing. So I’m starting up a weekly round up. Each week I will share some of the best links I’ve encountered about this wide interwebs in an effort to spread the word!

  1. How the Inca Trail is Like Marriage at Simple Marriage
    Machu Picchu

    Machu Picchu

A beautiful metaphor of the long winding path of many, many stairs  to get to the sacred Incan city of Machu Picchu as an illustration of how its not about the destination, its about the journey together in marriage.

  2. The New KFC Fried Chicken Sandwich: Cruelty To Your Health at Fitness Spotlight
The sandwich revolution: No bread, just FRID CHICKEN!

The sandwich revolution: No bread, just FRID CHICKEN!

KFC has put out a new ‘sandwich’ that comes with clogged artteries on the side. Why bother waiting for the slow process with the regular fried chicken sandwiches? Scott Kustes from Fitness Spotlight expresses his dismay with this new invention, and includes a well-done msnbc video on the subject. He also offers alternatives to this crazy sandwich from the Paleo liftstyle he advocates.

The KFC sandwich revolution brings me to our next link:

  3. The is why you are fat

A blunt and hilarious blog that posts all the craziest food revolutions, such as the one above, that are, without a doubt, making us fat, including:

    Tempura bacon

    Tempura bacon

    Bacon chip nachos

  4. Stick Figures in Peril at Mashable

A funny collection of those warning signs found on Flickr, my favourite being:

    Stick guy in octopus peril

  5. Chevron’s Using Solar Power…to Drill for Oil

    Oh, the irony!

Get that footer to stay at the bottom

and STAY down from LOLcats

and STAY down from LOLcats

Every web designer has tackled the problem of keeping that footer at the bottom of the page, no matter the amount of content above it. At first look one might assume this is a simple task, but as it turns out, you can really drive yourself batty trying to make this seemingly simple task to happen.

A while back I settled on a not so perfect solution that used min-height’s to get the job done. This was alright, but it was problematic in that you never know how your user will have his or her browser sized. I continued on with the development of the site, but never felt quite right about leaving the footer that way. Today I decided to look for a better option once again, and I sure am glad I did! I happened upon Ryan Fait’s Make the Footer Stick to the Bottom of the Page solution!

The solution is so simply beautiful that it makes me wonder how it took so gosh darn long to figure out! There is really only one extra div in the html, and only 15 lines of css! Wait a second, did I just say “gosh darn”? Right well, never mind that.  Head over Ryan Fait’s site for all sorts of design resources, including the Sticky Css Footer I love so much!
